Registering for an Indiana State Unemployment Tax Account

Business entities that have paid wages in Indiana and met employer qualifications are required to register with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.   Please DO NOT attempt to register until wages have been paid. By using our on-line registration system, you will be able to receive your account number and tax rate immediately if you have met qualification criteria for your business type and provide the required information.

In general, you qualify as an employer in Indiana if:

  • As a regular employer you’ve paid $1,500 or more in wages in a calendar quarter or have had one or more employee (s) in each of twenty (20) weeks

  • You have had payroll in another state and have now paid payroll to employees in Indiana

  • You’re a governmental (not federal) entity and have paid payroll in Indiana

  • As a non-profit employer you’ve had four or more employees on any day in each of twenty (20) weeks

  • As an agricultural employer you had 10 or employees in each of twenty (20) weeks or have paid payroll of $20,000 or more in a calendar quarter

  • You’ve had domestic help that you’ve paid $1,000 or more in cash wages in a calendar quarter

Note: If the business is a result of a reorganization of, or acquisition from, or merger with, another business, you will not be able to register on-line at this time.  Please visit our webpage at http://www.in.gov/dwd/forms downloads.html to get the forms needed to register, or call 1-800-891-6499 for assistance.

If you start your registration and discover you do not have the information needed to complete the process, you may exit the application and return to where you left off if you log back on within 30 days.

The application will require that you certify your information after it is entered.  We suggest you print the confirmation page.  It provides your assigned account number and tax rate for the year.  You will need that information if you need to contact us at a later date.

If you wish for your payroll service or agent to have on-line access to your unemployment tax account, you must access the “User Maintenance” and then the “External Account Users” screen after you have finished registering and received an account number.  Likewise, on-line access for your staff may also be established through “User Maintenance” and then the “Internal Account Users” screen.

Thank you for using our on-line registration application.
